The meetings are also intended to address issues relating to the nomination process for the board of directors that will temporarily replace HISD’s superintendent and directors during this acquisition.
After the presentation, the TEA will answer questions from those present. If you’re unable to attend one of the meetings in person, the TEA says there will be a webinar afterward for people to watch.
ABC13’s Daniela Hurtado spoke with TEA commissioner Mike Morath last week, when the acquisition was announced, about what she’s looking for on the board and who she wants in her place by June 1.
“We want to make sure we have a very diverse decision-making body. We want people with different life experiences. Some who have an educational background, some who maybe have finance skills… who have different lived experiences because only when you have a sort of diverse group of people coming together, you can then come to what are the best decisions for the kids to make,” Morath said.
Under Texas law, it is ultimately up to Morath to choose the board of directors, however, he told ABC13 that he won’t govern, they will.
Requirements for serving on the board include being an eligible voter in Harris County, not being convicted of a felony, passing a background check, and completing a conflict of interest form.
ABC13 wants to help you get answers from state officials and legislators, too.
Eyewitness News anchor Tom Abrahams will moderate our upcoming Action 13 Town Hall, “HISD Takeover: What you need to know,” this Thursday at 7pm
