Two Virginia inmates have returned to custody after allegedly escaping from jail by tunneling through a cell wall, authorities said.
The men, John Garza and Arley Nemo, escaped from the Newport News Jail Annex on Monday afternoon, the Newport News Sheriff’s Office said.
According to the sheriff’s office, the men tunneled through a cellular wall that led to the outside of the building and then climbed the security wall. It wasn’t immediately clear what tools were used in the breakout.
Authorities said they learned that Garza, 37, and Nemo, 43, had gone missing during the regular head count on Monday night.

The sheriff’s office said early Tuesday that the two men had been arrested in Hampton, just outside of Newport News.
Nemo has been in custody since October on charges of credit card fraud, credit card theft, forgery, possession of burglary tools, grand larceny, contempt of court and probation violation, according to the state’s office. sheriff. It’s unclear whether he filed any pleas.
Garza has been in custody since December on charges of contempt of court, probation violation and failure to appear. He pleaded guilty to non-appearance and violation of CCD S/C.
Nemo and Garza’s attorneys did not immediately respond to ABC News’ request for comment.
