1 dead, 1 injured in Miami Beach spring break shooting

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Gunfire erupted in a crowded area of ​​Miami Beach during spring break, killing one, wounding another and sending dozens to safety, the agency said. police.

Two men were killed Friday night and one person was arrested at the scene, the Miami Beach Police Department tweeted. It was unclear whether the person being held was the killer. Police also said three handguns were recovered.

The shooting occurred on South Beach’s Ocean Drive, which is closed to automobile traffic along its busiest stretch as hundreds of people gather to celebrate spring break. One of the victims died in hospital and the second person was listed in critical condition, police said. Their identities were not immediately released.

Dozens of people scrambled to flee the gunfire, authorities said. Several blocks in the area were cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape.

The shooting is the second in as many years during spring break in South Beach. Last year, the city imposed a midnight curfew after two shootings on Ocean Drive as well.

The year before, there were nearly 1,000 arrests and dozens of weapons seized during a turbulent spring break that led Miami Beach officials to take steps to calm the situation.
