Costco will open its first Tomball location in 2024, city officials say
According to city officials, one of the world’s largest wholesalers is expected to open a new location in Tomball this June.
Costco filed a permit last year to build a store on the northeast corner of Holderrieth Road and State Highway 249. It will be the first Costco in Tomball.
The 161,131-square-foot warehouse is expected to sit on 25 acres and will also include a 10,000-square-foot Costco gas station.
Costco is a member-based wholesale store with a large selection of products including groceries, housewares, and other items. Costco is not only known for its wholesale sales but also has several other departments such as electronics, apparel, and a food court.
Nathan Dietrich, director of community development with the city of Tomball, said the retailer plans to begin construction in June with plans to open in 2024.
Harris County Precinct 3 began construction this month on a project to expand Holderrieth Road from a two-lane road to a four-lane avenue.
“This expansion will help with the increased traffic this development generates,” Dietrich said.
A single-family neighborhood is also planned to be developed north and east of the Costco tract, he added, and additional commercial developments have been proposed along the Holderrieth facade.
Dietrich said the store is expected to create about 125 job opportunities and will attract shoppers from across the region, bringing major economic benefits to the city. Costco is expected to make $196 million in its first year and more than $300 million by its sixth year, according to Dietrich. He said the position is expected to bring the city $13.2 million in net benefits over the next decade.
According to Forbes, in 2022 Costco was the sixth largest retailer in the world. Costco has 849 locations and employs over 304,000 full-time and part-time positions. Costco made $222.7 billion in revenue in 2022.
